These few blocks measure less than a mile but are long on history. Long dormant, this strip of nightclubs, bars and restaurants has resumed its role as cultural center for Memphis music, each year attracting thousands from around the world for its blues, jazz, and rock and roll. Downtown Memphis needs its Beale Street the way Beale Street needs its street musicians. The city's legendary music depends on the sounds produced on its most famous street, and that street in turn depends on the individual horn players and guitar strummers who keep the crowds coming. |
